If you are a big city dweller like us, you may often try to find ways to break the daily rhythm and search for a calmer place outside the craziness of the city. After living in Boston for nearly a decade, we have compiled a brief list of places we often enjoy traveling to as our escape.
After living in Boston for almost a decade, we finally decided to get out of the house this past summer and go explore Arnold Arboretum. Even though, I have always heard great things about this cherished park, my dread for South Boston’s traffic and my feeble laziness have kept us from visiting.
One aspect that I love about living in Boston is the option to find parks of numerous shapes and sizes throughout the city. They range from the very large such as the Back Bay Fens, “The Fens”, located near Fenway Park. The all-embracing Charles River Esplanade stretching along the riverbank and smaller ones such as the Norman B. Park.
Greater New England
No wonder why Newport remains a very popular destination for many tourists and has served as a residence for the wealthy throughout history. We recently took a two hour drive from Boston to visit this historical port city and its famous 19th century mansions, but I did not know the area had such a magnificent natural beauty.
It was Labor Day weekend and I wanted to get out of the house to enjoy the last weekend of summer. I was not sure where to go – there is actually a lot to do during this time in Massachusetts – but I wanted to explore something new. What actually came to mind was an area of New England I had never really explored before – Connecticut – a place we normally drive through on our way to New York.
The small towns of Gloucester and Ipswich are located 20 minutes from one another and are one of our favorite spots to go outside of Boston. Due to their close proximity you can see both as a day trip from the city, but if you really want to enjoy all they have to offer, spending a night in the area would be your best bet.
